What Happens During a Professional Duct Cleaning

2 min read

How long it takes, whether it makes a mess, and each step our technicians follow, from protecting your floors to the final check.

If you've never had your ducts cleaned, it's natural to wonder what's involved. Will it take all day? Will there be dust everywhere? Here's what to expect when our technicians arrive.

How long does it take?

For a home with one furnace, cleaning typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Homes with more than one furnace usually take around 3.5 hours, depending on the size of the house.

Step by step

  1. Protecting your home. We protect floors and furnishings in the work areas before we start.
  2. Connecting to the main trunk. High-powered vacuum equipment is attached to the main trunk line. This puts the whole system under negative pressure, so loosened dust is pulled toward the vacuum instead of out into your rooms.
  3. Cleaning each vent. Every supply and return vent is cleaned individually using agitation tools that knock buildup loose from the duct walls.
  4. Supply and return lines. Both sides of the system are cleaned: the ducts that deliver air and the ducts that bring it back to the furnace.
  5. Final inspection. We check the work before we leave.

Will it make a mess?

No. Because the system is under vacuum while we work, debris is contained and carried away. We clean up after every job.

How to prepare

  • Make sure we can reach every vent. Move furniture or rugs that cover floor registers.
  • Clear a path to the furnace.
  • Let us know about pets so they can be kept in a quiet room.

After the cleaning

Put in a fresh furnace filter and keep up with regular filter changes. That keeps your clean ducts clean for longer.
