How Often Should You Clean Your Furnace in Calgary?

2 min read

Once a year is the rule of thumb, but Calgary winters, pets and renovations can change the answer. Here is how to decide.

Your furnace does a lot of work in Calgary. Heating season can start in September and run well into May, and a cold snap can keep the system cycling around the clock. All of that running time pulls dust, hair and debris through the blower and across the burners.

The short answer: once a year

For most homes, a professional furnace cleaning once a year is the right schedule. The best time is late summer or early fall, before you need the heat. A clean furnace starts the season running efficiently, and any worn parts are found before the first cold night instead of during it.

When you may need it sooner

  • Pets in the home. Hair and dander collect on the blower wheel and in the filter faster than ordinary dust.
  • Recent renovations. Drywall and sawdust are very fine and get drawn straight into the return air.
  • Allergies or asthma in the family. A cleaner system means less dust being recirculated through every room.
  • Strange noises or smells when the furnace starts, or a burner flame that looks lazy or yellow instead of steady blue.

What a furnace cleaning covers

A proper cleaning goes well beyond changing the filter. The technician inspects the system, shuts it down safely, cleans the burner and heat exchanger area, cleans the blower motor and fan, checks the filter, and then tests the furnace to make sure it runs the way it should.

Between cleanings

Check your filter every month during heating season and replace it when it looks grey or clogged. Keep supply and return vents clear of furniture and rugs, and keep the area around the furnace free of boxes and storage.

Not sure when your furnace was last cleaned? If you can't remember, it's probably time. Call us at 403-651-5895 to book before the busy season fills up.
