Your heating system moves all the air in your home many times a day. Here is how it can help, or hurt, if you have allergies.
Your furnace and ductwork move all the air in your home through the system many times a day. That makes your HVAC system one of the biggest factors in how much dust, dander and pollen you breathe indoors.
How dust builds up in the system
Everyday dust, pet hair, skin flakes and pollen are pulled into the return vents. The filter catches some of it, but fine particles pass through and settle in the ducts, on the blower and around the furnace. Each time the system runs, some of that buildup is blown back into your rooms.
Why Calgary homes are especially affected
Calgary's long heating season means furnaces run for much of the year. Our dry climate also lets dust stay airborne more easily. Homes are kept closed up through the winter, so the same air is recirculated again and again.
Steps that help
- Change your filter on schedule. A clogged filter stops filtering and restricts airflow.
- Choose a good filter. A mid-range MERV filter catches finer dust and dander than a basic one. Check what your furnace can handle.
- Keep return vents clear so air moves through the filter as designed.
- Vacuum regularly, ideally with a HEPA vacuum, so less dust reaches the returns in the first place.
- Get the system cleaned. Filters prevent new buildup but can't remove what's already in the ducts.
What our customers notice
Many customers tell us the air feels fresher after a furnace and duct cleaning. One recent customer noticed a difference the very first night, with no stuffy nose.
