Moving Into a New Home? Put Duct Cleaning on Your List

2 min read

You don't know what the previous owners left in the ductwork. Why a duct cleaning belongs on your move-in checklist.

When you move into a new home, you clean the floors, wipe down the cupboards and maybe repaint. But the ductwork is usually forgotten, and it holds whatever the previous owners left behind.

What could be in there

  • Pet hair and dander from animals that lived in the home, even if you don't have pets yourself.
  • Years of dust if the ducts were never cleaned.
  • Construction debris in newer homes, such as drywall dust and sawdust from the build.
  • Renovation dust if the seller updated the home before listing it.

The best time is before you move in

If you can, book the cleaning between possession day and moving day. The house is empty, every vent is easy to reach, and your furniture and belongings aren't there to collect the dust.

Do the furnace and dryer vent too

While you're at it, have the furnace cleaned and checked and the dryer vent cleaned. You'll start fresh with all three, and you'll know exactly when each was last serviced.

A simple move-in checklist

  1. Change the furnace filter and note the date.
  2. Book duct, furnace and dryer vent cleaning.
  3. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  4. Find the furnace shut-off switch and the main water and gas shut-offs.
